Born in New York City at the dawn of the 1960s, Sam got his BA in Semiotics at Brown University, and an MFA at USC. After spending several years in East Asia as a writer and teacher, Sam returned to California, indulged a love of obsolete automobiles and MOMA-sanctioned design icons, and got married.
Sam opened his Los Angeles gallery in 1999, selling idiosyncratic twentieth-century objects that you might see in a museum but want for your living room. Some pieces have anonymous authors, but everything is informed by the qualities that Sam values in applied art. Naturally these include beauty, craftsmanship, and historical interest... but also playfulness, fantasy, and originality.
