Funn Roberts was conceived in Topanga Canyon and born in Aspen Colorado, and grew up in northern California and in Northern New Mexico. He comes from a long line of builders and carpenters, and also enjoys the pursuit of healing work, helping others when there is an opportunity.
In High School, Funn apprenticed with a master blacksmith and after graduation did a second apprenticeship with a luthier turned cabinet-maker in Santa Fe. He honed his craft and opened a blacksmithing studio with fellow blacksmith Eric Sarbach in Boulder, Colorado in the mid nineties. In 1997, Funn moved out west to Southern California and -- through a series of fortuitous connections, -- was hired to build music legend Bob Dylan’s personal office in Santa Monica, and also designed custom furniture for actor Dustin Hoffman, and went on to design and build multiple items for both Bob and Dustin’s kids.
A chance encounter while working at House of Hardwood led to a year-long apprenticeship with master silversmith Allan Adler -- [silversmith to the stars] and opened his mind to the creation of titanium jewelry. Shortly after this time he received his first patent for a cryogenic vapor plug used in the cryogenic dewar industry while working as a research and development shop lead for cryoport inc.
Since then, Funn has gone on to design homes, remodel bathrooms, craft custom jewelry designs, and create sustainable outdoor furniture and children's’ play areas.
Designer-builder Roberts soon began landing referral work from Grow Outdoor Design and through his relationship with them has done custom work for actress Rachel Griffiths, (“Six Feet Under” and “Brothers and Sisters”), -- and Vincent Kartheiser of “Mad Men” TV fame. Most notably, Funn designed and built the actor’s Hollywood home using reclaimed materials in th eJapanese industrial-style. In his spare time, Funn enjoys making cigar box guitars, titanium jewelry, and sustainable architecture.
