Back to East Side Home Tour 2014

Faced with a sloped property in a developed suburban neighborhood, architect Michael Ferguson had to be clever. "One of the major challenges of this project was how to make a very small hillside parcel feel as large as possible," he says.

Ferguson carefully positioned the lower level in the center of the property, and built a lap pool that doubles as an 8-foot-high retaining wall, freeing up space for two flat courtyards. Large glass doors pivot open from the living and dining areas to the terraced courtyards for an easygoing indoor-outdoor feeling. The end result is a home offering expansive views, privacy, and the comforts of a less formal retreat.
